The investment comes from Nick Wheeler, the student entrepreneur who founded Charles Tyrwhitt. Student Upstarts invests up to £15,000 in exchange for up to 8% equity in student teams to create and build businesses. The criteria is simple - one member of the team must be a full-time student at a UK or European higher education institute, or have graduated from one in the last 12 months. This applies to undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. Student Upstarts was established in 2012 with the aim of investing in 100 Student businesses by the end of 2015. The motivation for this is the huge potential of the talent that we see in the UK’s universities together with the belief that with our investment, support and network Student Upstarts will discover the next generation of entrepreneurs who will become the UK’s business leaders and change the world.
Christian is the former President of Imperial Entrepreneurs at Imperial College London, where he still acts as a Consultant. During his studies he had worked to set up an incubator program within Imperial for students to start and run their own businesses while studying. However, after 6 months of working towards this goal he was presented with an opportunity to take his work to a city-wide scale and has taken a break from his studies to make this happen.
Matthew was one of the first people Christian met to discuss Student Upstarts before it even had a name. His continual involvement and passion for the program lead to him joining the team as a partner, bringing in his wealth of expertise. Matthew is an investor in later stage digital, tech and creative businesses at Pembridge Partnership Limited, is active in the London tech community and was responsible for bringing a Y Combinator partner to the UK for ycldn. He also runs 9others - a problem solving/round table discussion for entrepreneurs over a good meal. Matthew was recently a guest of the British Council in Latvia, to judge their Young Creative Entrepreneur competition, and is on the Entrepreneurship special interest group at The British Computer Society.
